Lenca - Pottery

This large indigenous group today spans the regions of south western Honduras and eastern El Salvador. They have largely lost their native tongue, but several of their ancient traditions continue. One of these traditions is their sought-after pottery creations. Their pottery making, a continued activity that reaches far back into the mists of pre-European contact history, today is still practiced using local clays. The Lenca alfareros (potters), taking some cues from an Italian archeologist who has been working with them and investigating their society for decades, have created a line of pottery that is rooted in their millennial plastic arts tradition which is coupled with a strikingly contemporary aesthetic.
