Ecological-Cultural Mask 011

Iguana and Birds

This particular wood carved wall mask features a crawling iguana, a toucanet and other local birds including a trogon.

Using the same wood species (balsa wood and tropical cedar), these fine primitive art pieces are reminiscent of story boards allowing the mask artists to render scenes of the landscapes, flora and fauna of the tribe’s territory, as well as scenes from their native legends, cosmology and Pre-Columbian past. These very elaborate and almost narrative ‘ecological-cultural masks’ are an evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka ceremonial masks.  A selection of these wood masks show different scenes of their centuries-old, annual ceremony, Danza de los Diablitos.

  • Tribe: Brunka
  • Size: 9.5″ x 19.5″
