Ecological-Cultural Mask 016

Jungle Crown

A more recent exploration of their mask making tradition, Brunka carvers are using the balsa wood mask as a ‘canvas’ on which to depict other aspects of their world. In this case, renowned Brunka mask makers and artists, Jorge Morales and Bernardo González, of Boruca village, have created a striking composition with these jewel-like tropical hummingbirds creating a jungle crown about the head of the ever-present ancestral spirit pervading this piece through its serene visage. Protecting the whole is a defending jaguar.
