Ecological-Cultural Mask 003

Lord of the Forest

These elaborate and almost narrative ‘ecological/cultural masks are an evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka ceremonial masks. Using the same wood species (balsa wood or tropical cedar) as the worn masks, these fine art pieces are reminiscent of story boards allowing the mask artists to render scenes of the landscapes, flora and fauna of the Brunka tribe’s territory, as well as scenes from their native legends, cosmology and Pre-Hispanic past.

This jaguar study contemplates the food chain itself and the role of all local living beings in jaguar territory: all of the animal communities, plus the indigenous peoples’ communities, as well as the animals’ spiritual caretakers and persisting ancestral spirits all intertwined within Brunka territory.
