Ecological-Cultural Mask 013 (small)

Neo-tropical Mammals

This particular mask features a rich composition – a grouping of natural and cultural elements in one whole. A homage to neo-tropical mammals, specifically the anteater and sloth (both related animals), this piece cleverly encapsulates a Native human ‘spirit face’ in the landscape which is crowned by the tree in which these animal cling – all residents of the Brunka people’s territory.

Using the same wood species carved for the larger masks (balsa wood and tropical cedar), these smaller versions are very popular for their size and price tag.  Such elaborate and almost narrative ecological and cultural masks of the Brunka indigenous peoples represent an artistic evolution emerging from their traditional ceremonial masks.

  • Tribe: Brunka
  • Size: 6 1/4″ x 10 1/4″ (16cm x 26 cm)
