Ecological-Cultural Mask 015

World of the Shaman

This carved wall mask’s composition celebrates the world of the shaman – the principal traditional cosmology of the Native groups of lower Central America. This ‘eco-mask’ is an exposé of the local flora and fauna of the Brunka tribe’s territory combining with the visage of an ancestor – the duríj (shaman) – nestled amongst the varied fauna (constictor, delicate orchids, colourful birds) with which the shaman intimitely relates.

Elaborate and almost narrative ecological themed cultural masks such as this are an evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka ceremonial masks. Typically carved from balsa wood and tropical cedar, these decorative masks are reminiscent of story boards allowing the mask artists to render scenes of the landscapes, flora and fauna of the tribe’s territory, as well as scenes from their native legends, cosmology and pre-Columbian past.
