Ecological-Diablo Masks 009

Ancestral Forms

Enigmatic, ecological, this ancestral forms mask design, carved from a single cut of tropical cedar wood, actually corresponds, in the main, to the traditional carved diablo masks used by the Brunka in the Danza de los Diablitos fused with local fauna (jaguar) and repeated cultural elements: nestled diablito visages encrusting this larger mask.

This richly carved mask features a composition melding the diablo‘s (representing the Native person), a human face and part feline. This mask is a clear example of the notion of nagual (one’s animal ‘alter-ego’), shamanic transformation, or ‘shape shifting’.
