The hybrid ‘eco-diablo’ mask type is a fusion, or hybrid, of the traditionally worn diablo Brunka mask, used in the annually celebrated Danza de los Diablitos, combined with compositional elements borrowed from their natural surroundings and including tropical animals. This evolution and exploration of form slowly came about through an emphasis and play with design elements, seen in certain older diablo masks, of an ‘alter-ego’, or totem animal, featured on the forehead, and/or chin, of the mask.
This fascinating and very well executed piece features a composite of the traditional diablito mask, fused with forest, the jaguar, butterflies and toucanets. All seamlessly combined in this one fabulous composition. All of these animals are residents in Brunka territory. This tribal artist of renown has acheived such detail in the painting as to render so naturally the flora and fauna featured here.
