This cedar tribal mask is a diablo mask typical of one worn in the Danza de los Diablitos, whose aesthetic harkens back to an earlier time (the Brunka danza has been celebrated for centuries). In addition to balsa wood, tropical cedar, such as this classic, is also popular in the carving and creation of the Boruca’s tribal masks. This mask’s creator is the famous Boruca village elder Ismael González – an octagenarian whose masks we feel fortunate to have in our collection as Ismael’s production rate has dropped considerable due to his health.
