Traditional Diablo Mask 017 (small)

“Droopy Horns” Mask

Carved by one of the more talented mask makers of Boruca village, this simple, yet richly detailed,  miniature ceremonial mask represents a chieftain-demon carved from tropical balsa wood and is a smaller version of the traditional, hand-carved wood diablito mask-type used by the Brunka to represent themselves in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. In the ceremony, the antagonist, the toro (bull), represents the invading Spanish.

This miniature tribal chief mask is a clear reference to the interchangeability of the diablito (little devil) characters (of their traditional masked ceremony) and animal spirits (in this case the jaguar, whose patterns feature prominently).

  • Tribe: Brunka
  • Size: 7″ (17 cm) tall
  • Artist: Casilda Rojas
