Traditional Diablo Mask 009

Master Mask Carver

This unpainted wood mask’s design corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka to represent themselves in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. This complex carved mask design is made from a lovely cut of balsa wood. It is in a style typical of the Brunka village of Rey Curré, where it was carved, displaying oft-used elements of local fauna (an owl totem in this case) fused with the typical diablito. Gonzalez, the mask maker of this piece and a master mask carver and esteemed village elder, fills regions of the surface of the mask with encrusted local seeds -a unique touch used to great effect!
