Traditional Diablo Mask 008

Scornful Mask

This intricately carved and painted balsa wood mask’s design corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka to represent themselves in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. The antagonist, the toro (bull), represents the invading Spanish.  A classic diablo mask carved by the well known Brunka mask maker, Edixon Mora, a protegé of the late Jorge González (famous cultural figure of the Brunka tribe); with a scornful expression, this mask features a curious mixture of aggression and serenity – typical of many Brunka masks.
