As the masked diablito jugadores (‘demon’ dancers or players) have always symbolized the Brunka people themselves in this venerable tribal ceremony, this mask is a typical design. The chosen nagual/alter-ego for this diablito is a bat – nocturnal hunter par exellence – dominating the mask’s forehead.
This spectacular mask, once put on by the wearer, really transforms the jugador (masked ‘player”) into a mythical entity. “Bat Energy” mask is a complex piece displaying painstakingly drawn ‘shamanistic power’ lines, motifs from local petroglyphs and references to jaguar skin. This tribal mask, was worn as part of the Danza de los Diablitos of 2016-2017 in the village of Boruca. Valuable photo documentation of this mask being worn in the danza is available.
