Used Ceremonial Mask 005

Scarlet Macaw Mask

Carved and painted balsa wood, this used ceremonial mask was worn in the Danza/Juego de los Diablitos of 2015-2016 in the village of Boruca.

The diablito, or little devil, mask represents the aboriginal population in the choreography of the danza. A wild animal, an ogre, or the visage of an ancestor can also symbolize the indigenous population in the danza. This scarlet macaw mask is a homage to this local bird who plays an important role in Brunka cosmology and legend and who provides the Brunka with their outrageously colourful feathers for traditional headdresses and worn accessories.
