This particular decorative plate features a bold design: multi-coloured butterfly-medley and geometric patterning. In a concentrically expanding layout, this piece uses to its advantage the roll-stitch employed in this basket. The dynamic elements of this composition are laid out around a central, stylized blossom.
These decorative wall plates, bowls and disks are made of split chunga palm leaf and natural dyes, reflecting the fine basketry work of the indigenous Emberá and Wounaan of Panama. Design themes are derived from the flora and fauna of Wounaan territory in the Darien region of Panama, as well as geometric motifs derived from the body decorations traditionally applied to men and women alike for particular events.
