The hybrid ‘eco-diablo’ Brunka mask type is a fusion of the traditionally worn diablo mask used in the annually celebrated Danza de los Diablitos combined with compositional elements borrowed from their natural surroundings. With this style of mask, local flora and fauna can be seen filling spaces in the diablo’s visage, whereby, for example, one sees toucan heads replacing demon horns, or frogs playfully clinging to ferocious fangs. This evolution and exploration of form slowly came about through an emphasis and play with design elements seen in certain older diablo masks, of an alter-ego, or totem animal, usually featured on the forehead and/or chin of the mask. This mask type is carved in both balsa wood and tropical cedar wood by Brunka tribe artists.
