Wounaan Baskets

There likely does not exist any finer basket in the world than these Wounaan baskets, woven from the leaves of the chunga palm over horizontal strands of naguala fibres. The high-art form that these baskets have reached has evolved from the utilitarian baskets that Wounaan and Emberá women of Panama have been weaving since time immemorial. Gifted weavers express their culture and their surroundings in the ‘cultural’ and ‘flora and fauna’ designs seen in their baskets. Such baskets are destined to become heirlooms for those discerning art lovers who acquire them.
