Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Costa Rican artist, Eugenia Barrionuevo, resident of Manzanillo in the Province of Limón on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, uses this enamel ware metal crockery – typical of local kitchens – as the ‘canvas’ for her studies of Afro-Caribbean residents and the surrounding communities along this pretty and colourful coast.
This particular study is a bird’s eye view of the coastal town – now quite well known – of Puerto Viejo, Limon Province, Costa Rica. Tidy garden plots by brightly coloured vernacular Caribbean homes and the ever present beach is the focus of this composition.
Eugenia’s art reflects studies of people of African descent along Costa Rica’s south eastern coastline.
