Amphibian Mysticism

This is a mystically charged painted canvas by Melvin González, famous Brunka mask maker, ceremonial diablito participant, and more recently, prolific and recognized painter. Melvin has already established his name internationally for his carved masks, but more recently González is cultivating acclaim for his highly detailed painted canvases; he typically depicts regional flora and fauna as well as themes exploring Brunka cosmology and history.

This ‘shadow-boxed’ painting (acrylic on canvas) – seemingly floating in a void -is part of a series of paintings that González has created exploring the representation of historic and legendary themes of the Brunka tribe through a spherical motif – an allusion to these pre-European near-perfect stone spheres. These cultural objects have been just recently declared by UNESCO as earning the category of World Heritage.

Through this composition, a homage is assembled to the kan só rójc – the enigmatic stone spheres from the pre-European contact era found throughout the territory of the southern Pacific coast watershed of present-day Costa Rica. The composition centres around the jewel-like ‘chocolate mint’ poison dart frog – a resident of this tribe’s territory in the southern Pacific watershed of Costa Rica.
