Handmade Pottery CH03

Out of stock

Although original handmade pottery pieces such as this metate, or ceremonial grinding stone, are made from stone,  a particular Chorotega artist has created this beauty in the traditional oven-fired pottery for its sculptural elegance. As are the tribe’s original carved stone pieces, this metate has an animal head – a jaguar – and a mano, the elongated piece that one grips and runs along the top of the metate deck to grind the corn. The deck features the sacred (double) figure of Quetzalcoatl – the major deity of most Mesoamerican traditions.
