Description

Jicara Art: Mystical Armadillo Large guacal

The traditional dried jícara fruit shell has been used for bowls (guacal) by the region’s native groups since time immemorial.

This traditional handmade vessel for liquids, still used by the Maleku, has been created as an arts and crafts object as well as being, at the same time, a utilitarian kitchen item. The striking painted surface features local fauna on a particularly large jícara – in this case, a mystical armadillo. Ready for hanging on the wall.

  • Tribe: Maleku
  • Location: Northern Plains of Costa Rica
  • Size: 8 1/4″ x 13 3/4″ (21cm x 35cm)
