Painted jícara Vase
The traditional Maleku tribal vessel for liquids, still used by the Maleku, are created from the jícara (dried tropical fruit shell) and, as of late, this ancestral material has been employed to create unexpected forms, such as this vase!
The striking painted surface by this artist of the El Sol palenque (village), Catalina Elizondo, features a stylized frog displaying influences derived from Pre-Hispanic aesthetics.
The traditional dried jícara fruit shell has been used for bowls (guacal) by the region’s native groups since time immemorial.
