Gran Nicoya Archeological Region.
This seated female figure depicts a noble woman of a pre-European contact civilization of the Guanacaste/Nicoya region of Costa Rica. She is a woman of rank in all of her finery, flattened head, large earspools and complex body tattoos, or painted, corporal designs. A notable feature of this female subject’s pose – the ceremonial/religious posture (stiff torso with arms akimbo and other emphasis on elements related to fertility/birthing).
