Pottery Female Figure

This effigy, of a seated female figure with a bowl of offerings, is one of many found in excavations in Costa Rica. It belongs to the Diquís archeological area (southern Pacific coast watershed of present-day Costa Rica) and was apparently a valuable item in its era. Many of these pieces have been found in its region of origin and they might have had a role as a talisman for the home especially related to maternity and children. This figure tells us much about the importance of women in these societies. These figures’ heads and facial features are basic and stylized. Body paint, or tattoos (red and black over a cream-coloured background) are also a feature that stands out.
