Trophy Head Pot

Gran Nicoya Culture – Later ‘Early Archeological Period’ : 500 – 700 CE

Typical of earlier Nicoya pieces, this object is a trophy head pot – a rather grisly vessel design depicting the severed head of an esteemed enemy. Featured are symbolic references to Mesoamerican cultures from the North showing such cultural influences that started to manifest in today’s northwestern Costa Rica around the year 800 CE. This object must have been of particular importance for the afterlife. All treasures from these civilizations were found buried in tombs.

  • Size: 7″ x 7 1/2″ (18cm x 19cm)
  • Pre-Columbian Pottery
  • 500 – 700 CE
