Early Dawn Rainforest
This particular Brunka ‘eco-mask’ – “Early Dawn Rainforest” – a carved balsa wood piece features a scene of the tropical rainforest waking up in the morning replete with a yawning jaguar and a hummingbird pair attending to their nest of tiny eggs with the forest filling up with the day’s first light. The carved balsa wood becomes a canvas used by this famed mask maker to depict his natural surroundings at home in Boruca.
These elaborate and almost narrative ecological and cultural masks represent an artistic evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka ceremonial masks.
