Hummingbird Totem
A more recent exploration of their mask making tradition, Brunka carvers are using the balsa wood mask as a ‘canvas’ on which to depict other aspects of their natural (and supernatural) world. In this case, renowned Brunka mask maker, Esteban Morales, of Boruca village, has created a striking composition with a vinette of rainforest wildlife from the Pacific Ocean waterdhed and a glimpse into the Brunka metaphysical side to a forest habitat featuring the ghostly visage of the hummingbird totem, or dueño (steward, or chief). The backdrop of this tranquil composition is the interminable green of the Central American rainforest.
