Waters of the Pacific Ocean

A more recent exploration of their mask making tradition, Brunka carvers are using the balsa wood mask as a ‘canvas’ on which to depict other aspects of their world. In this case, renowned Brunka mask maker, Esteban Morales, of Boruca village, has created a striking composition with a vinette of marine life of the waters of the Pacific Ocean. This underwater scene swims about the head of the ever-present ancestral spirit pervading this piece through its serene visage seen at the bottom of this composition.
