These fine tribal art pieces are reminiscent of story boards allowing the mask artists to render scenes of the landscapes, flora and fauna of the Brunka tribe’s territory, as well as scenes from their native legends, cosmology and Pre-Columbian past. The very elaborate and almost narrative ‘ecological-cultural masks’ are an evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka tribal masks used in their annual ceremony, Danza de los Diablitos.
This particular carved, painted, black panther mask – nocturnal presence – is a study of this venerated resident of Brunka territory and of the stealth hunter that is the puma in his nocturnal habitat. This big cat’s visage reflects what he sees – deep forest and a full moon night sky. He also represents the transformed durìj (shaman) manifest as a stealth feline to apply justice to the breakers of sacred tribal taboo. Ideal for wall art decor.
