This stunning tarantula mask, carved from balsa wood, features a composition charged with the energy of the pristine rainforest realm – not for the faint of heart. A living work of fine art – is the study Morales chose for this composition.
These very elaborate and almost narrative ‘ecological-cultural masks’ are an evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka ceremonial masks. Hand carved and painted from balsa or tropical cedar, these fine decorative masks are lyrical pieces allowing the mask artists to render scenes of the landscapes, flora and fauna of the tribe’s territory, as well as scenes from their native legends, cosmology and Pre-Columbian past.
