Winged Rainforest Animals
This particular Brunka ‘eco-mask’ – “Winged Rainforest Animals” – is a carved balsa wood piece and features a scene in the shade of the canopy of the tropical rainforest. This study depicts two morpho butterflies with their wings up, a scarlet macaw and a trogon bird. The carved balsa wood becomes a canvas used by this well known mask maker to depict the natural surroundings at home in village of Boruca in the southern Pacific watershed of Costa Rica.
These elaborate and almost narrative ecological and cultural masks represent an artistic evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka ceremonial masks.
