This complex painted balsa wood mask’s design – “avian protector” – corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka tribe in their annual ceremony, Danza de los Diablitos cleverly fused with bird designs (local toucan species) mimicking mask horns Complementing the toucan “explosion” are a pair of perched motmot birds. This hybrid mask type is a clear homage to their tribal history, cosmology and local wildlife within their territory.
A most creative piece, this mask has been carved from the local balsa wood and features the classic ceremonial diablo mask type melded with painted ecological elements. Makes for stunning wall art.
