Blue Morpho Butterfly Vision
The hybrid ‘eco-diablo’ mask type is a fusion, or hybrid, of the traditionally worn diablo Brunka mask, used in the annually celebrated Danza de los Diablitos, combined with compositional elements borrowed from their natural surroundings and including tropical animals. This evolution and exploration of form slowly came about through an emphasis and play with design elements, seen in certain older diablo masks, of an ‘alter-ego’, or totem animal, featured on the forehead, and/or chin, of the mask.
This fascinating and very well executed piece – blue morpho butterfly vision – features a composite design: the stern face of an ancestor (in the form of a diablito) from whose right eye springs a stunning blue morpho butterfly and its forest dwelling place – all seamlessly combined in this one fabulous composition. This tribal artist of renown has achieved such detail in the painting it transcends being a carved wood mask!
