Overwhelming Fauna diablito Mask
This hybrid ‘eco-diablo’ mask type is a fusion, or hybrid, of the traditionally worn diablo mask, used in the annually celebrated Danza de los Diablitos, combined with compositional elements borrowed from their natural surroundings. This evolution and exploration of form slowly came about through an emphasis and play with design elements, seen in certain older diablo masks, of an ‘alter-ego’, or totem animal, featured on the forehead, and/or chin, of the mask. The concept of ‘alter-ego’, transformation, or ‘shape-shifting’, is a prevalent theme seen in the masks worn in the danza.
This particular Brunka tribal mask – overwhelming fauna – features, melded with a typical ceremonial mask visage, various local bird and insect species encrusted all over and throughout the piece. Carved with exuberance and decorated with painstaking painted detail, this carved balsa wood piece makes for stunning wall art and is a powerful rendition of the Brunka diablito mask!
