Description
Hidden Rainforest Energy
This complex ‘ecological-diablo‘ mask – its elements alluding to a hidden forest energy – is a conceptual diablito mask (albeit steeped in tradition) conceived of by Brunka mask makers of renown, Bernardo Gonzalez and Esteban Morales. The piece itself symbolizes the aboriginal Brunka people – it is very much a symbol of the tribe itself. The connection with their ancestral territory is clearly reflected in the interwining of rainforest with a kagbru (‘diablito’ in Spanish) mask face. It is carved from balsa wood and then carefully painted.
Such worn masks are still used in this venerable tribal ceremony: la Danza de los Diablitos. Brunka territory is situated in Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast watershed.
The Brunka tribal masks are extraordinary wooden wall art pieces – an unexpected uniqueness. A great piece to begin a collection or one to add to.
