Mating Season

Enigmatic, ecological – this frog ‘mating season’ mask design, carved from a single cut of tropical cedar wood, actually corresponds, in the main, to the traditional carved diablo masks used by the Brunka in the Danza de los Diablitos fused with local fauna (birds) and cultural elements: an embedded ancestral visage is encrusted in the lower part of the mask.

This richly carved mask features a composition melding the human element with local wildlife – an obvious symbol of the connectivity of the Brunka people with the land.
