Description

Avian Demon

Enigmatic, ecological – this carved tropical laurel wood avian demon mask design, carved from a single cut of this buff-colured tropical hardwood with pretty grain, corresponds to the traditional carved diablo masks used by the Brunka in the Danza de los Diablitos fused with local fauna (a parrot, or macaw in this case).

This carved mask features a composition melding the traditional “little devil” element, a centuries-old motif, with local wildlife – an obvious symbol of the intimate connection between the Brunka people with the land. Carved in the indigenous village of Rey Curre, southern Costa Rica.

  • Tribe: Brunka (Boruca)
  • Size: 4 1/2″ x 7 1/3″ (11cm x 18.5cm)
  • Artist: Jose Rojas
