This complex painted balsa wood mask’s design – “underwing false-eye” – corresponds to the traditional indigenous Brunka diablo mask-type used by this tribe in their annual ceremony, Danza de los Diablitos. This mask’s design cleverly fuses flora, fauna, insect camouflage and ancestral geometric motifs into its lively composition. This hybrid mask type is a clear homage to their tribal history, cosmology and local wildlife within Brunka territory.
