This very complex painted balsa wood mask’s design – “rainforest being” – corresponds to the traditional indigenous Brunka diablo mask-type used by this tribe in their annual ceremony, Danza de los Diablitos. The design cleverly fuses flora, birds, insects, and amphibians in its design. This hybrid mask type is a clear homage to their tribal history, cosmology and local wildlife within their territory.
A most creative and abstract piece, this mask has been carved from the local balsa wood and features the classic ceremonial diablo mask type melded with these painted ecological elements. Makes for stunning wall art.
