Rainforest Vignette, Rey Curre Village
This Brunka tribal mask’s design corresponds to the traditional diablo-type used by this southern Costa Rican indigenous group in their annual Danza de los Diablitos (Rey Curre village). Fused with the typical kagbru (“little devil” in Spanish) visage of the traditional mask, a forest vignette opens over its forehead, replacing the traditional nagual, or totem animal often found in these ancestral mask designs.
