Mask of the Bull
This key mask – the toro or bull mask – representing a bull, is the emblematic character which the Brunka chose to represent as the antagonist, the Spanish invader, in their annual Danza de los Diablitos. This is an exact model of the actual antique mask that has been used year in and year out for the ceremony. The toro, or bull, is a single personage in the Danza and is the focus of the diablos’ (representing the indigenous population) ire and taunting. The last act of the Danza de los Diablitos ends with the slaughter of the bull – but not before the bull had massacred the diablos (representing the terrible attacks by the invading Spanish forces against the indigenous) in the act before the demise of the bull.
Carved from a local tropical hardwood and real bull’s horns.
