Description
Blue-Eyed Devil
This traditional Brunka tribal diablo mask – a blue-eyed devil – with bared fangs is a typical mask design used by certain male ceremonial participants of their community representing themselves/ancestors in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. The antagonist in this traditional choreography, the toro (bull), represents the invading Spanish.
Created by traditional mask maker and esteemed ceremonial participant from Boruca village, Edixon Mora L., this mask is decorated in harmonious tones and intricate detailing in motifs, some of which are allusions to animal skins as well as petroglyphs, typical of such Mora masks.
