Description
‘Mono-horn’ Boruca diablo
A theatrical expression with an outrageous mono-horn chin executed with painstakingly painted detail, this impressive hand carved (balsa wood) mask’s design is a traditional Brunka diablo mask type – a classic. The personnage represents a Brunka tribal ancestor from historic Brunka territory (which extended from today’s Quepos down to territory inside the Province of Chiriquí, Panama along the Pacific coast watershed). For today’s Brunka people, such masks represent an ancestor in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos worn by ceremonial particpants in the village of Boruca and Rey Curre and are objects that have come to be a touchstone of tribal identity generally
