Traditional Diablo Mask 015

Diablito Stack

This oversize carved/painted balsa wood mask’s design corresponds to the older traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka to represent themselves in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos.

This most striking, abstracted ceremonial mask – a diablito stack – composition is a ‘tour de force’ created by a Brunka mask carver of renown.  Multiple traditional Brunka ceremonial mask visages flow seamlessly up from the base of this large piece ending in an ancestral chieftain in a feather headdress.

Featured on the chief, in the upper part, are seen ancestral gold accoutrements – a pre-European technology that the ancestors of the Brunka people excelled in.
