Power Centres

This well conceived and intricately carved and painted balsa wood mask’s design corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used in Brunka tribal culture to represent themselves in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. The antagonist, the toro (bull), represents the invading Spanish.

This powerful four-horned mask could represent notions of power centres and the surface details simply brings more mysticsim to the piece. Regions of the mask are covered with designs alluding to animal skins and scales, petroglyph marks and shamanic ‘power lines’.
