Hand carved and splendidly painted balsa wood mask. This is a finely decorated mask with designs alluding to ancestral petroglyphs, animal skins, butterfly markings and shamanic ‘power-lines’ . A ceremonial diablo-type mask to be used in the tribe’s annual danza, or juego. Carved by the renowned Brunka mask maker, Edixon Mora Lázaro of Boruca village. This wall mask’s design corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka in the Danza de los Diablitos and the relationship between the Brunka people and the living biosphere that surrounds them.
