Glowering

Hand carved and splendidly painted balsa wood mask. This is a finely decorated traditional tribal mask with a glowering visage and a luminescent painted surface – complemented with petroglyph motifs/animal skins markings and shamanic ‘power lines’.

A ceremonial diablo-type mask typically used in the Brunka tribe’s annual danza, or juego. Carved by the renowned Brunka mask maker, Hermes Morales, of Boruca village. This wall mask’s design corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka in the Danza de los Diablitos and the relationship between the Brunka people and the vibrant biosphere that surrounds them.
