Exotic Tropical Hardwood Mask
Brunka tribal art: carved mask from tropical cedro wood. This is a smaller diablo mask typical of one worn in the Danza de los Diablitos. Besides balsa wood, tropical cedar and other hardwoods are also carved for the masks used in this venerable tribal event. This mask is from the second principal Brunka community of Rey Curre where one can see a more diverse wood types being carved for their masks, whereas in the larger, principal Brunka village of Boruca, really only balsa wood and at times cedar wood are carved for their traditional masks. The remarkable wood grain of ronron wood and the graceful carving expressed in this lovingly crafted traditional mask is its main attraction.
