Description

Lineage

Brunka tribal art, Costa Rica: carved/painted balsa wood oversized conceptual mask. This remarkable indigenous cultural piece – “Lineage” – is an oversize tour de force work of art featuring a traditional, ceremonial diablo mask – typical of those worn in their annually celebrated Danza de los Diablitos, ancestral material culture (pre-Columbian pottery), the venerated jaguar, an ancetsral visage and regional fauna and the rainforest backdrop.

This complex carved work was created by a mask maker from the principal Brunka tribal community of Boruca in Costa Rica’s Zona Sur (Southern Zone, Pacific coast watershed). The remarkable painted detail in this mask brings to life the mystic as well as the natural elements that visually create a reconstruction on native Brunka thought and cosmolgy.
