Description

Master of Vipers

This carved wood diablo mask’s intense design, master of vipers, corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka to represent themselves in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. The antagonist, the toro (bull), represents the invading Spanish.

This traditional mask is a replica of one actually worn during this 3 day, venerable tribal event.  The mask is signed by the artist from the Fernandez family of Boruca. An emblematic traditional mask – in the typical Boruca village style, it features snakes in its design – recreating one of his favourites that he has worn in the danza/juego de diablitos.

This diablo mask is typical of many of the painted (balsa) wood masks used in the Danza; expressions in these masks can range from exaggeratedly aggressive to serene and contemplative. Unique wall art decor for home or business.
